Anodizing (electrolytic oxidation) is a process that uses electricity and chemistry to grow a controlled oxide layer on the surface of a metal — most commonly aluminum. The resulting anodic layer is extremely hard, porous enough to accept dyes and lubricants, and significantly improves corrosion and wear resistance compared to bare metal.

The part becomes the anode in an electrolytic bath. Under controlled voltage and temperature, the natural oxide layer on the aluminum is thickened many times over, converting the surface itself into a protective ceramic-like layer — it doesn’t coat the metal, it becomes part of it.

Hard anodizing (Type III) produces oxide layers thicker than 25 µm using lower bath temperatures and higher current. The result is a surface harder than tool steel, with superior wear resistance, better lubricant retention, and excellent dielectric properties.

Bare aluminum forms a thin natural oxide layer, but it’s not enough for demanding environments. Anodizing multiplies that protection, which is why it’s standard practice in aerospace, marine, automotive, and outdoor applications.

The porous structure of the fresh anodic layer absorbs dye before the surface is sealed. We offer natural (uncolored) and black finishes as standard.

Every part needs at least one contact point to carry current during the process, and that point remains untreated. Careful racking minimizes and positions these contact marks where they matter least.
